SPICY FAJITA TORTILLA CRUNCH WRAP is my version of the trending Tiktok tortilla wrap hack which has mesmerized everyone with its ease and simplicity.
This is delicious, spicy and a treat for Mexican food lovers albeit with a bit of crunch and spice in every bite! Do read on for many tricks and options to make it your own!
If you have been following online chefs, home cooks and food bloggers in the last few days on social media, there is no way you would have missed the trending tortilla hack where a Tiktok sensation brilliantly uses a simple tortilla and transforms it into a handheld wrap which has gone viral and everyone is sharing their own version.
Now, looking at the simplicity of the hack, all of us, me including, ended up thinking, “now, why did I not think of that”!
WHAT IS THIS VIRAL TIKTOK TORTILLA HACK?
A Tiktok user shared this easy dish with a simple store bought tortilla. Using a simple single cut in it, topping it with a variety of fillings and flipping the 4 quarters one on top of the others, transformed it into a pan grilled, hand held, easy to eat meal! An absolute delicious snack, lunch or dinner option with not much cooking or mess! No spoons or forks needed here.
I would say it is a handheld version of another Mexican dish quesadilla. In a quesadilla you would have to cut it into wedges to make it hand held!
Now, to make it your own version, the basic tortilla used can be a flour tortilla with whole wheat flour or plain flour (which you normally use for Mexican dishes like burrito and chimichangas) or you could make your own at home like the Indian rotis or chapatis which we make with whole wheat flour. But make sure it is large in size.
In this post, I have used store bought tortillas but next time it is going to be using my homemade Indian style roti/chapatti.
Fillings you say? Here, sky is the limit but keep in mind the combinations you think should go wonderful together; sweet or savory.
My savory version of this hack has a spicy fajita filling along with cheese, fresh veggies and a secret crunchy delight!
Once filled, either grill on a pan or use a Panini press or sandwich maker.
FAJITA TORTILLA CRUNCH WRAPS MY WAY:
You will need a really large tortilla first; at least 12 inches! Use store bought or make your own at home, but it should be large in size!
I used the following fillings for the wrap:
I love grilled and spiced up stir fried veggies like in a fajita mix, so when I decided to make this wrap, I could think of no other than a mix of my favorite veggies in fajitas: red onion, bell peppers and zucchini!
Any fajita needs some spices and seasonings to oomph things up! And my favorites are garlic powder, turmeric powder, Chipotle Roasted Garlic powder, Piri Piri spice powder and cumin powder. Here, you can use the spices you love or have in your pantry.
I love the crunch of tortilla chips and if you have enjoyed the tortilla crunch wrap some Mexican restaurants serve, then you know what I mean. These have some crunchy tortilla chips in the wrap which adds a heavenly crunchy texture in every bite; my secret ingredient!
Not a big fan of those chips especially in your wrap? Then leave them out; no one is going to judge you.
In this version, crispy, nacho type crunchy tortilla chips are going to be one of the fillings. Crunch, crunch, crunch in every bite for me!
Rests of the ingredients are:
Grated cheddar cheese (you can use your favorite kind of cheese here)
Pickled red onions (I have some homemade ones but you can use freshly sliced onions instead)
Some sliced tomatoes and Spinach to add some veggie freshness and bite in my wrap. If you have iceberg lettuce, feel free to use that to add an authentic restaurant style Mexican feel.
Picante sauce or Mexican salsa – I am using a bottled Picante sauce here; but you could use a homemade version; do check out my homemade salsa recipe here. You could also use any bottled spicy sauce. Why, even ketchup like chili garlic tomato sauce sounds good if you like a sweet twang in your bite.
A creamy dressing/sauce to add some mellow creaminess like Ranch or yogurt dressing or even some mayonnaise to cool things ups a bit – totally optional
TO MAKE THE WRAP:
Just make ONE single cut from the center to the edge of the tortilla (store bought or homemade). Then visualize the tortilla into four quadrants.
Start layering up the fillings in the 4 quadrants as shown below making sure to not place any filling over the cut.
Next, begin to start folding the quadrants one over the other taking care to keep the fillings intact; here it helps to not overfill!
Make sure the fillings are not spilling out. Try not to overfill or add large pieces of fillings.
The final step is to place the wrapped tortilla on a hot griddle; stove top or electric sandwich maker or Panini press and toast or roast on both sides, gently pressing at the top until both the sides are golden brown, slightly crispy and all the fillings especially the cheese is hot and melty. I have smeared some butter (you could use oil too) on the hot pan to toast the tortilla crunch wrap.
That is it! Remove from hot pan and serve hot! This wholesome Spicy Fajita Tortilla Crunch Wrap was just amazing and my husband was like “put this on my list of thoroughly enjoyable and must make often dishes”!
Nothing more to be said after that! Just try this folks. You are going to love it too, especially with those crunchy tortilla chips and the spicy fajita mix in them! Do not forget the salsa and fresh veggies too not to mention the cheese!
Turn any fillings of your choice into a handheld delicious masterpiece of your liking!
Love cold wraps? Then this hack is also one for you!
Choose your favorite fillings and enjoy your own customizable tortilla wrap as a snack, for lunch or even dinner!
Enjoy Foodies and Happy Eating!

- 1 cup chopped zucchini
- ½ tsp jeera/cumin seeds
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- Dash of black pepper powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder/cayenne pepper powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp Chipotle Roasted Garlic powder or use any of your favorite spice mix powders from your pantry
- ½ to 1 tsp garlic powder or 1 tbsp grated fresh garlic
- 1 tsp Piri-Piri seasoning powder; again optional
- Salt to taste
- 3 tbsp oil
OTHER INGREDIENTS FOR THE WRAPS:
- 4 large store bought tortillas or use homemade
- 1 cup grated cheddar cheese adjust the amount as per taste
- ½ cup sliced tomatoes
- Some pickled red onions or use fresh sliced red onions
- Handful of spinach leaves for each wrap
- 1 to 2 cups crisp tortilla or nacho chips
- Red Mexican sauce/salsa bottled or homemade
- Any white creamy salad dressing or mayonnaise sauce; optional
- Some butter or oil for roasting the wrap
FOR SERVING:
- Sour cream or thick yogurt
- More salsa or tomato sauce
Instructions
First step is to make the fajita filling:
-
Heat oil in a large saucepan and once hot, add jeera or cumin seeds and sauté for a few seconds.
-
Add the sliced onions and stir fry on medium heat for a couple of minutes until slightly softened.
-
Stir in the spices: turmeric powder, black pepper powder, garlic powder, Chipotle Roasted Garlic powder, cumin powder etc.; mix well and stir fry for a few seconds.
-
Tip in the chopped vegetables with salt to taste and stir fry on medium high for a few minutes until the veggies are slightly cooked but with still a crunch and bite to them.
-
Sprinkle Peri Peri masala powder, give it a good mix and remove from heat and let cool slightly.
TO MAKE THE FAJITA TORTILLA CRUNCH WRAP:
-
First step is to layer the tortilla with your favorite fillings:
-
Lay the tortilla on a plate or cutting board and using a knife (or you can use kitchen scissors), make one cut from the center of the tortilla to the edge.
-
Now, visualize the tortilla as four quarters.
-
Starting from the left and first quarter, start piling up the filling ingredients; first some fajita veggie mix, second quarter, layer grated cheese, pickled onions and tomato salsa.
-
To the third quarter, spread some crisp nacho or tortilla chips (cut into smaller pieces). If you want your wrap to be spicier, sprinkle some more Piri Piri spice powder or any of your favorite spice powders.
-
On the final last quarter, layer some fresh spinach leaves, tomato slices and drizzle mayo or salad dressing on top.
-
The order and amount of fillings you pile up can be according to your preference and taste.
-
Next, to fold the wrap, starting from the first quarter, gently fold over on to the next quarter, making sure not to spill the filling.
-
Continue folding over the other two quarters over the final fourth quarter to create a layered quesadilla like sandwich.
-
Now, grill this in a hot Panini press, sandwich press or on a hot griddle smeared with some butter or oil on the pan.
-
Try and grill on medium heat, pressing gently using a flat spatula (if using the stove top griddle) until heated through and slightly grilled and toasty on both sides. I covered it with a lid to facilitate melting of the cheese!
-
Serve immediately as such or enjoy topped with or dipped in more salsa, maybe some yogurt/sour cream or even ketchup!
-
These fillings in my wrap actually did not need any side or dip to accompany them!
-
Make some today and enjoy being part of this viral madness that this tortilla hack has generated!
-
Happy Cooking and Eating!
Recipe Notes
- Adjust the amount and type of spices according to your taste.
- Use your favorite veggie in fajitas.
- Not fond of the crunch from the chips? Then leave it out; will still taste awesome!
- Best served hot just off the griddle!
