APPLE "DONUTS” – fresh slices of apples topped with your favorite spreads and toppings for a healthy and delicious dessert/snack!

Fall is here and leaves are falling like crazy all over our garden! The best part of living in the New England area of USA is the beautiful, riot of colors all the trees are painted with during the fall/autumn (September to November). Each day sees different parts of the tree tinged with that light red or yellow color with still lots of greens still visible.

When it reaches its peak of color, driving around the eastern part of USA, especially the north east is seeing all the thick and lush trees in different hues of orange, red, yellow, magenta, green etc.! People from all over the world come here just to have a glimpse of this every fall!

This is the time when apples are at their peak and the taste is at their best! You get an amazing variety of apples like Granny Smith, Honey crisp (one of my favorites), McIntosh, Gala (another one I love), Red Delicious etc. to name a few!

Recently, I came across a bag of these delicious new variety; Ginger Gold at my local grocer. Apparently, it is a local produce from this New England area and we had to get a bag and of course, we are not disappointed. Eat local is the mantra always and the taste was amazing with a mild sweetness and a slight tang in every crispy bite!

Apples being the theme for our gourmet Facebook group “Healthy Wellthy Cuisines” suggested by Sasmita @Firsttimecook this time, I could not think of a better time to share my version of apple donuts.

Do check out her wonderful blog with super amazing clicks and mouthwatering recipes, both traditional and modern.

WHAT ARE APPLE “DONUTS”?

I have made a number of dishes with fresh ripe apples, but when our Facebook group “Healthy Wellthy Cuisines” chose the theme “apples” this time, I had to make these delicious and easy to make, no-cook, no-bake apple donuts using these fresh Ginger Gold apples.

Everyone knows what donuts are; baked or fried dough coated with a simple cinnamon-sugar mixture or dipped in chocolate sauce or any other fruit flavored sauce. Our all-time favorite is the glazed donuts, plain and chocolate.

But these made with fresh apples are totally guilt free and need no cooking! Just slice up some apples and remove the core or center portion to make it look like a donut.

HOW TO MAKE APPLE "DONUTS":

Wash and slice apples into thick slices and core them to remove the seeds using either a melon baller or even a steel icing tip if you have! Using a knife would be fine too. Don't these look like donuts already?

cored apple slices

Choose your favorite spreads; it could be peanut butter, chocolate sauce, cheese spread, jam, yogurt etc. Slather them over these slices of apples and enjoy either plain or topped with raisins, chopped dry fruits, fresh fruits, chocolate chips or any other topping you like.

Wipe each slice of apple with a tissue or paper towel to mop the extra moisture on the slices. If there is moisture, it will be difficult to spread peanut butter and/or any nut butter, cream cheese etc.

Spread the apple slices with your favorite spreads and toppings, keeping the balance of nutrition in mind when using chocolate chips or Nutella!!

My combinations this time:

  • Peanut Butter with chopped dates and sunflower seeds
  • Peanut Butter with sliced almonds and chocolate chips
  • Blueberry yogurt with fresh blueberries
  • Strawberry cream cheese with almonds and chocolate chips and dates with blueberries
  • Jalapeno cream cheese with almonds and the other with raisins and sunflower seeds
  • Nutella (chocolate spread) with breakfast cereal and the other with fresh strawberries

Serve immediately or keep in refrigerator until serving time! Go wild with your imagination depending upon what you have in your pantry/fridge. Use any type of apple you like or have.

Don’t you think it is a great way to make your kids eat their fruit/apples? Apples are delicious by themselves, but topped with these delicious delights, you can entice them to eat some more, get more nutrition and have an indulgent snack or dessert!

apple donuts

Making these apple “donuts” is a great way to make anyone (who crinkle their noses at eating fruits) enjoy apples, ! Have fun making these!

So, like I said, just slather slices of cored apples with their favorite spread, be it peanut butter (natural and sugar free, if possible) or any other nut butter, cream cheese (flavored or otherwise), Nutella (a scrumptious chocolate spread; you need some indulgence in life and who can resist a jar of this chocolaty yumminess!), yogurt (flavored or plain) and a plethora of toppings (healthy or just indulgent) like raisins, chopped fruits, nuts, chocolate chips, dry fruits etc.

Just let your taste buds decide what you want and make these “apple donuts” the next time you have a huge basket of apples for your family and friends. This is a great dish for your next party too; just lay all the spreads and toppings and let everyone make their own apple “donut”. Just have fun!

Enjoy food lovers and Happy Eating!

APPLE “DONUTS”

Prep Time: 16 minutes

APPLE “DONUTS”

Fresh slices of apples topped with your favorite spreads and toppings for a healthy, yet delicious dessert/snack!

Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 apples, green or red or a combination of both
  • SUGGESTED SPREADS:
  • Peanut butter/nut butters (Natural and no sugar added if possible)
  • Cream cheese (flavored or plain salted)
  • Nutella (or any other chocolate spread)
  • Thick yogurt (lightly sweetened or salted or even flavored ones)
  • SUGGESTED TOPPINGS:
  • Raisins
  • Chopped dry fruits like apricots, dates, cranberries
  • Chopped nuts – walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds
  • Chocolate chips
  • Fresh fruits – chopped strawberries, blueberries or any other fruit you prefer
  • Granola, dry breakfast cereal
  • OTHER OPTIONAL TOPPINGS:
  • Shredded coconut, colored sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Wash and cut apples into thick slices. Using a cookie cutter, frosting or icing tip or even knife, melon baller etc. remove the core of the slices.
  2. Lay the slices on a plate.
  3. Just before using any of the spreads, wipe each slice of apple with a tissue or paper towel to remove excess moisture. This helps in slathering them easily on the slices. and then spread with your favorite spreads and toppings.
  4. Let everyone make their own and watch the fun and excitement!
  5. Enjoy and Happy Eating!

Notes

Make sure to wipe each slice of cored apple with a paper tissue to absorb the excess moisture. This helps in spreading nut butters and Nutella easily.

Use any kind of apple, be it green or red as long as they are fresh and juicy.

An apple corer or melon baller is the best way to core the apple slices. You could use a knife too.
