Cantaloupe Lassi

Cantaloupe lassi

Cantaloupe Lassi – a refreshing yogurt based Indian beverage; sugar free, healthy and perfect to quench your thirst any day of the year!

Summers being here, it gets so hot during the day that lunch is always accompanied by something cool and refreshing to tone the heat down.

For Indians, nothing sounds better than some thick raita with our meal or a tall glass of lassi; be it sweet or savory!

WHAT IS LASSI?

Lassi is nothing but a yogurt based Indian drink with fresh yogurt; like a smoothie.

Thick yogurt is blended with fruits for a sweet delight or with cilantro and green chilies (and sometimes ginger and other spices) for a savory but cool quencher.

We love enjoying some form of yogurt based dish with our meals at lunch but our favorite nowadays is a tall glass of lassi and our current favorite is Pomegranate Lassi which I cannot even count the number of times we have had!

CANTALOUPE LASSI:

We had just run out of pomegranates to make our favorite lassi and I was looking for something to make more lassi to go with lunch.

I then remembered that we had some fresh cantaloupe which we had got from our last grocery haul; so my foodie mind thought; why not try a cantaloupe lassi?

So, I chopped up a portion of the cantaloupe and blended with some thick yogurt until smooth and frothy. One taste of this and I could not contain my joy and glee!

It was sweet, delicious and a totally guilt free drink as I had added no sugar at all; guess the sweet cantaloupe did the magic!

But if your cantaloupe is not too sweet, do not hesitate to add a dash of honey, maple syrup or any sweetener you like.

The next cantaloupe was a bit on the lesser sweet side, so added a bit of honey and viola! Totally to my liking again!

So, the next time you get a fresh cantaloupe from your grocer, do make this refreshing Cantaloupe Lassi and I am sure you will be making it again and again!

Enjoy Foodies and Have a wonderful Summer!

Cantaloupe Lassi

A refreshing yogurt based Indian beverage with cantaloupe; sugar free, healthy and perfect to quench your thirst any day of the year!

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ to 2 cups thick yogurt
  • 2 cups chopped cantaloupe
  • OPTIONAL:
  • Honey or any sweetener of your choice if the cantaloupe is not too sweet
  • Cubes of ice while blending
  • A dash of salt
  • Roasted cumin powder
  • Fresh cardamom powder
  • Mint leaves for garnishing

Instructions

  1. Peel and chop ripe, juicy cantaloupe into cubes.
  2. In a blender jar, add 2 cups of thick yogurt (make sure it is not sour) and add the chopped cantaloupe.
  3. Blitz until smooth and thick.
  4. Do a taste test and if not sweet enough, add honey, maple syrup, sugar or any other sweetener of your choice.
  5. Pour into tall glasses and serve immediately, garnished with a sprig of fresh mint leaves.

Notes

For a lovely aromatic tone, you can stir in roasted jeera powder or even fresh or powdered ginger in the lassi.

Make sure the yogurt is not sour and if sour, stir in some honey or sugar to balance the tang.

Add ice while blending for a cool, cool lassi!

Such a refreshing and different flavored lassi. I usually use up less sweet cantaloupes for a salad but lassi sounds very good too.

This is a fabulous recipe and I make this often when my cantaloupes are not sweet enough to just eat on its own. Honey is a brilliant choice of sweetener and it works really well with the flavor of cantaloupe.
