Easiest Pizza Dough Cinnamon Rolls

March 18, 2017 by curryandvanilla 2 Comments

Pizza dough cinnamon rolls are the easiest cinnamon rolls you can make if you have leftover pizza dough or even store bought dough. It is the perfect recipe for quick super soft, pillowy sweet bread bursting with buttery cinnamon swirls.

I can never say “no” to any dessert; be it Indian or International. Donuts and cinnamon rolls are on the top of my list of sweet rolls to indulge in.

Although donuts are now available in almost every bakery store, I prefer to make my own donuts at home with my easy and simple recipe for egg free chocolate glazed and regular glazed donuts . Of course, sometimes I do go for the store bought ones when I crave for one or do not have the time or energy to make one.

Making homemade cinnamon rolls has always been on my bucket list of to-do recipes, but never got around to trying them out. When I was visiting family in Iowa recently (where I started my blog with all enthusiasm), cinnamon rolls was one of the first sweet roll I baked but with store bought refrigerated crescent rolls from Pillsbury. They came out so decadent and fluffy that if you do come across a box of refrigerated crescent rolls, do try my easy recipe for crescent cinnamon rolls; you will love them too.

If you have been following my cooking adventures, then you would have seen my recent recipe for  deep dish spinach stuffed pizza, which is a treat for pizza lovers! The spinach and mushroom stuffed whole wheat pizza came out so cheesy and tasty, but I did end up with some leftover whole wheat pizza dough which I stored in the refrigerator. What better time than now to try cinnamon rolls using this leftover dough.

All it took was for me to roll out the dough (leave it on the counter for about 10 to 15 minutes to thaw), smear generously with butter, sprinkle some sugar (you can use plain cane sugar or even brown sugar) and aromatic cinnamon powder; generously again.  Roll tightly, cut into 1 inch pieces, let them rise and bake.

The smell of heavenly and earthy cinnamon wafting through my house was to die for! A quick glaze or drizzle of icing on the warm rolls (be generous again!) took the scrumptious fluffy sweet rolls to a different dreamy level.

One bite of these warm cinnamony rolls and I was floored. It took me back to the first time I had made them. They came out so soft and scrumptious that it was decided; every time we had pizza at our home, I would make extra dough just to indulge in this decadent treat!

Do try this recipe the next time you make pizza from scratch and have leftover dough or just follow my recipe of homemade pizza dough found here and have a sweet dessert snack of homemade warm cinnamon rolls!

Easiest Pizza Dough Cinnamon Rolls

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Yield: One 9-inch round pan

Easiest Pizza Dough Cinnamon Rolls

Easy cinnamon rolls using leftover pizza dough!

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups left over pizza dough (recipe here )
  • ¼ cup or more unsalted butter, softened
  • Granulated sugar (as needed)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons cinnamon powder (or as needed)
  • For the glaze:
  • ½ cup icing sugar
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons milk or water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit or 190 degrees centigrade.
  2. Grease a round baking pan (8-inch or 9-inch round pan).
  3. On a lightly floured surface, roll the pizza dough into a ¼ inch thick rectangle.
  4. Spread softened butter evenly over the rolled dough up to the edges.
  5. Sprinkle all over the butter with sugar and cinnamon powder generously.
  6. Starting with the long side of the rectangle (the one closest to you), gently roll the dough to form a tight spiral.
  7. When it is fully rolled into a log shape, with a sharp knife, slice into 1 to 1 ½ inches even pieces.
  8. Gently place all the rolls, cut side up into the prepared pan, leaving some space for them to rise and expand, for about 30 minutes.
  9. Transfer the baking pan into the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the rolls are fully baked and turn light golden brown.
  10. Meanwhile, while the rolls are baking, prepare the icing.
  11. In a small bowl, mix ½ cup of icing sugar with a little milk or water (I used 2 teaspoons) with a spoon or whisk to a smooth mixture. Keep aside.
  12. Once the baked cinnamon rolls are out of the oven, cool for a few minutes.
  13. Gently, drizzle, pour or spoon the prepared icing over the baked rolls to coat them evenly.
  14. Serve decadent, warm, divine cinnamon rolls immediately.
  15. Leftover rolls can be stored on the counter for a day or two or even refrigerated.
  16. Remove and bring to room temperature before serving.

Notes

You can mix sugar and cinnamon ahead of time and then sprinkle evenly over the spread butter.

Pizza dough is stickier to work with, so dust with more flour while rolling the dough.
