Heart-Shaped Tea Sandwiches Recipe

Heart-Shaped Tea Sandwiches are a delicious twist from the regular square or triangle-shaped sandwiches with another sweet twist; beetroots or beets in the savory filling and Nutella (chocolate hazelnut spread) and your favorite fruit jam, jelly or preserve for the sweet bites!!! They are perfect for any picnic, or your kids’ lunch box and with Valentine’s Day just a few days away, a delightful treat to serve your loved ones! They make adorably elegant party bites too!

After making the vegetable pinwheel sandwich (with carrots and cabbage in a mayonnaise filling), I was tempted to make heart-shaped sandwiches for the upcoming Valentine’s Day treat with a red or pink color filling! Two cute heart shaped cutters; one big and one small were lying in my baking drawer waiting to be used. So, out they came!

I detest adding any colors to my food; so when I started to make a filling for this dainty finger food, it just popped in my mind that the beets lying in my refrigerator are the perfect vegetables to add color to the mayo filling! Beetroot is not a popular choice for a sandwich filling, but one bite of this soft, fresh and colorful beet-mayo sandwich, and you will love it, as did we!

To maintain the crunch, I left the beets raw (you may choose to cook them if you want).  For added nutrition and added crunch, cabbage and bell peppers fit the bill.  Just mix finely chopped vegetables in your favorite mayonnaise (I used the eggless variety), spice it up with black pepper and chilli flakes (totally optional), stir in some herbs and you have a beautiful beet-mayo savory filling with a lovely dark pink hue!

Now, how can I forget the little ones?  They are going to turn up their nose at these pink heart-shaped lovelies (they have vegetables in them, especially beets!!), but once you place the small, sweet, heart-shaped bites oozing with Nutella or their favorite jam on their plate, you will have no trouble convincing them to eat the savory beet sandwiches (see, they ate their vegetables too!).

Sometimes, sandwiches turn soggy if kept for a while, so I have buttered the slices for the savory filling.  Butter acts as a buffer between the filling and the bread slices; so they remain fresh. If you do not like Nutella, you can use peanut butter or a combination of both.  Along with jam, you can spread peanut butter too.  Just slather Nutella on one slice and peanut butter on the other; do the same with the jam sandwiches. Feel free to add sliced bananas or even strawberries with the Nutella or jam!!!

So, if you are looking for elegant, dainty and colorful sandwiches for Valentine’s Day or your next kitty party, luncheon, or even to treat your kids to some healthy snacks, try these Heart-Shaped Finger Sandwiches.

Whip up these savory and sweet heart-shaped tea or finger sandwiches for Valentine’s Day!

Heart-Shaped Tea Sandwiches Recipe

Cute, refreshing and bite-sized sandwiches you can enjoy with your favorite tea, the way the British savor!

Ingredients

  • 12 slices white or wheat bread
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped peeled beetroots
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped bell pepper/capsicum
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped green onions
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped cabbage
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons mayonnaise (with egg or eggless)
  • Black pepper powder
  • Crushed red chilli flakes
  • Softened butter
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons Nutella (chocolate-hazelnut spread)
  • 2 teaspoons mixed fruit jam (or any red colored fruit jam, spread or preserve)

Instructions

    FOR THE BEET-MAYO FILLING:
  1. Finely chop the vegetables or use a food processor (makes it easier and quick).
  2. Transfer the chopped vegetables to a bowl.
  3. Add green onions and mix well.
  4. Stir in 2 to 3 tablespoons mayonnaise, black pepper powder and red chilli flakes (depending upon how spicy you want your sandwich) and mix well.
  5. Do a taste test and adjust the spices and salt accordingly. The mayo I used was slightly sweet (the way I like it!); you can add some sugar if you want.
  6. TO MAKE THE FINGER TEA SANDWICHES:
  7. I had two sizes of heart-shaped cutters, so I used the bigger one for the beet-mayo sandwich and the smaller one for Nutella and jam-filled sandwiches. If you have bigger cutters, make one heart-shaped slice for each slice of bread. Mine were smaller, so I got two heart-shaped slices, one big and one small.
  8. Take one slice of bread and place the cutters over them to get 2 heart shaped bread slices.
  9. Continue with the other slices to make more heart-shaped slices; (the leftover bread can be used to make breadcrumbs).
  10. Butter all the 12 larger heart-shaped bread slices for beet-mayo sandwiches on one side.
  11. Gently place a small teaspoon of filling over half of the larger slices (about 6) and spread it evenly with a palette knife.
  12. Place the other 6 slices (with just butter) with the butter side down on top of this and press lightly. Dainty beet-mayo tea sandwiches are ready.
  13. Now to make the Nutella and jam sandwiches.
  14. Over 3 of the smaller slices apply and spread Nutella gently. Place the other half over the top and press gently. Nutella sandwiches are ready.
  15. Similarly, make the jam sandwiches.
  16. Serve these delightful, dainty and pretty heart-shaped sandwiches to your Valentine or any loved one as a snack with evening chai/coffee or as a starter or appetizer at any party. They stay good in your kids’ lunch box too, especially the jam and Nutella hearts!!!
