How to Prepare MenasinaSaaru at home: The easy way
With Monsoon banging with all its glitter and force, it is time to eat some spicy food. Some foods not just are good to taste during a particular season, but also good for health. One such recipe is MenasinaSaaru or Pepper Rasam. This can be made in 5 minutes, it is good in taste and good for health especially during rainy season. It keeps your body warm, soothes your throat and easily digestible. Hence, it is one of my favorite for rainy day dinner when I prefer something light and tasty.
Here I am giving two varieties with simple steps on how to prepare menasinasaaru.
Version 1
Ingredients required for MenasinaSaaru:
- Black pepper – 15-20 grains
- Urad Dal – 1 table spoon
- Grated dry coconut – 2 table spoons
- Asafoetida – 1 pinch
- Curry leaves – few
- Salt to taste
- Small piece of jaggery or ½ spoon sugar.
- Ghee – 1 small spoon
Preparation:
- Fry urad dal, black pepper and asafetida using ghee till urad dal turns orange.
- After it cools, first dry grind it in small mixer jar, now add grated dry coconut and grind it to a smooth paste.
- Pour this into a vessel, add water and boil it. Now add curry leaves, salt and Jaggery.
- Tasty MenasinaSaru is ready. You can drink this hot which is very good or it can be eaten with rice. Rice should be soft to enjoy this Rasam.

Version 2
There is yet another, more simpler way of making MenasinaSaru. This is more suitable for drinking as it is really light.
Ingredients required for MenasinaSaaru:
- Black pepper – 15 to 20 grains
- Ghee – 1 small spoon
- Salt to taste
- Asafetida
- Pinch of Sugar
- Milk – 1 small cup
- Curry leaves
Preparation:
- Powder the pepper grains.
- Heat the ghee, add pepper powder, asafetida, curry leaves and fry for 30 seconds.
- Now add 2 glasses of water to this, then add salt, sugar and boil. Let it boil for 5 minutes and then switch off the stove.
- Wait for 5 minutes and then add 1 cup boiled milk to this. Mix well and enjoy!
- Add more salt if needed.
- Menasinasaaru or Pepper Rasam is ready! There cannot be simpler way of making Rasam.
- Makes 2 glasses of Rasam to drink.
Points to be noted:
- I suggest to use black pepper grains instead of readily available pepper powder.
- The consistency of the first version can be varied by varying the quantity of Urad dal, but it should not be very thick.
