Tokyo Treat Unboxing and Review

June 1, 2018 by curryandvanilla Leave a Comment

I am so excited and eager to unbox the Premium snack box package Tokyo Treat has sent me for an unbiased review. I cannot wait to dig into all the Japanese goodies!

Now, why am I excited? Because, recently, I got a chance to visit Japan with my family and I had a wonderful time there exploring the beauty and cuisine of Japan! Being a foodie and blogger, one of the many things I brought back home were Japanese cookies and chocolates, which my kids loved! By the way, my younger son is a crazy fan of Japanese Anime cartoons!

So, when Tokyo Treat contacted me to try out their Premium subscription snack box and review the products, I jumped at the idea of revisiting those pleasant memories by indulging in some more Japanese goodies again!

Now, let me stop the ranting and open the box!

Disclosure: This is a product review article for Tokyo Treat in exchange for one of their monthly subscription boxes with the products mentioned below. All thoughts, photos and opinions are my own. I have not been monetarily compensated for the same. Please note that some links may be affiliate links and I may make a commission if you purchase the product after clicking the link. This does not affect the price, but we appreciate your support in running this blog! Thank you!

Unveiling of the Premium Box of Tokyo Treat:

What is this Tokyo Treat subscription box? It is a monthly subscription you apply for online and Tokyo Treat (a Japanese company) ships you a box of yummy Japanese snacks (to anywhere in the world!) every month (free shipping!!) for a small fee.  It is filled with interesting Japanese goodies like drinks, savory snacks, chocolates, biscuits/cookies etc.

You can check out all the options available right here! Now, doesn’t that sound exciting? I am sure your kids would love it and if you are a lover of gourmet foods from around the world, you must try this.

I am excited and cannot wait to unbox my Tokyo Treat package to dig into all the goodies that they have been so kind enough to send me!

Now, let me stop the ranting and open the box!

The Unboxing:

Doesn’t this look like a treat for candy and snack lovers! The lovely orange colored box with so many packets of Japanese treats even comes with a book explaining in English, all about the snacks and goodies provided! Our family could not wait to taste all of them while I was taking pictures!

The Taste Test:

The first one we tried was;

Koikyea scone rich corn flavored corn snack:

This is a savory snack; Koikyea scone rich corn flavored snack!  Mmmm, looked a lot like Cheetos with a lovely crunch and flavor! This tasted like the yummy Indian Kurkure snack..my son who is a big fan of Kurkure had already snatched the bag to dig into! Definitely a winner!

Now to the Popsicle DIY kit:

A sweet candy!! Had to open up packs and dig into the liquid and powder first (instructions in book provided), but taste was ok. Kids would love it; sugary, slightly hard marshmallowy texture and flavor with a bit of a nice fruity zing! Nice.

The Happy Turn Soy Sauce Cheese Flavor rice crackers:

These were a winner for me. Crispy, crunchy, mildly, mildly sweet and super tasty! They do come in individual packs so no wilting crackers. Could go for a few of them myself!

Tonkatsu Sacue Umaibo:

This was a nice flavored snack, but when I opened the packet, it was a bit soft. I am sure it would taste great crispy, but came in soft, so hmmm, ok to eat.

Kakigori Ramune Candy:

These were yumm with a lovely bite to it; like mint candies. “Kakigori”in Japanese,  is apparently shaved ice, a summer treat in Japan. The two-colored candies had strawberry flavor and “Ramune” flavor; looked it up and found that “ramune” is a lime-lemon flavor. This candy was just that, delicious! Perfect for an after-dinner mint.

Melon Cream Soda Chips:

These chips had a combo flavor of salty potato chips with a carnival melon cream soda burst of flavor! Our family was divided on the reviews. My kids loved it, but my hubby and I .. not so fond of the sweet, melony flavor. Very interesting snack!

Yogurt Flavored Ginza Rusk:

As explained in the accompanying booklet, apparently, it is a sweet white chocolate yogurt Ginza rusk. Love these Japanese words, but coming to the snack..every bite was yummy with a sweet hard marshmallow taste and a lovely crunch! Loved it! It also comes in a Ziploc bag, so good to store and keep it fresh to enjoy later on.

Salty Seaweed Stick Potato Snack:

Crispy, thin and spicy bites of potato sticks; nice, crunchy and absolutely delicious.  This reminded me of the spicy potato sticks back home but with a Japanese flavor twist! Good one here. You get 5 individual packs, so no need to share with anyone!

Meiji Takenoko No Sato:

Basically, these are cookies and cream sweet snack. Loved the two-toned look, but one bite and oh no, we could not continue! Our family did not like this, but maybe there are some out there who would enjoy as it is still part of the snack box.

Cream Rusk:

It is a cream coated crisp rusk (only one provided, so sharing only in bits), but the flavor was mildly sweet and good.

Ikinari Dango Kit Kat:

Now who does not love Kit Kat? Love both white and dark chocolate ones, but this one was a white one with a unique flavor. Apparently, it is meant to taste like mochi filled with sweet potato and azuki red beans, all Japanese favorites. No one in our family liked it..maybe one of the other subscription boxes will give a different flavored one. Not a fan of this one.

Cheesnack:

One single cheesy crispy snack in one box. Taste was good and delicious but only one in each box. I would have loved some more of these. Also, the snack had broken up; would have been tastier whole I guess.

Tonkatsu Sauce Umaibo:

This month’s snack is a crispy, puffy savory stick with a mild sweetness. Okay, but not a big fan of this too.

Doraemon Gummies:

Kids would love this one. These come in a lovely package in funny shapes. It is sealed for freshness. We did take out one to taste it. It is sweet, gummy (like gummy bears), chewy and fruity. Nice but I guess  kids would enjoy this a lot!

And finally;

Pepsi J-Cola Midnight:

To wash this all down, you also get a soda bottle from Japan. This month’s flavor is a deeper Pepsi flavor with a refreshing cassis grape flavor. Very interesting and nice.
