apple mango raita

Apple and Mango Fruit Raita (no added sugar) - A delicious medley of apple chunks, sweet pomegranate arils, nutty bits of walnuts in a creamy and mildly spicy, naturally sweetened mango flavored yogurt; almost like a fruit custard but guilt free.

(No added sugar or any sweetener in this; no cooking needed and ready in 10 minutes)!

A dash of roasted jeera/cumin powder, a pinch of Pink salt and some sweetener if needed is all you need.

One spoonful of this gorgeous deliciousness and I was totally smitten by its creaminess, texture and flavor!

(Reminded me of an Indian dessert which all Indians love…..fruit custard; chunks of fruit in a creamy custard and oh so delicious especially in summers; the center of most parties)!

Enjoy it as a side with pulao, biryani, paratha meal or just binge on this as dessert/snack or as a side with any meal.

A great show stopper at any party and a good addition to any festive meal, you must try this especially during mango season when you can use the fresh seasonal ones.

Off season, feel free to use canned or frozen mangoes.

APPLE AND MANGO FRUIT RAITA

As the name suggests, this raita (normally a yogurt based savory sauce) has fruits instead of the regular onion, boondi or any vegetable you add and is savory and sometimes a bit sweet.

I had made a similar one a while back using bananas, apples, grapes, raisins etc. without mangoes. You can check it out here.

But this one came out on a whim and the need to use up the pack of apples in my fridge as well as the loads of mango puree I had just made from a large batch of fresh, seasonal ripe mangoes which I use up as much as possible and then freeze the rest for use later.

(All my meals are mostly based on using up leftovers and what needs to be used up in the fridge)!

I absolutely love binging on fruit raitas using fruits I have in my home.

This time, it was going to be using those apples but make sure the apples are crisp and delicious.

And of course that fresh mango puree which adds a natural sweetness to the raita; no added sweetener needed. (But do feel free to add if you like).

With 2 pomegranates too in the fridge; I had to add a bit of that for that pop of color and texture along with it’s freshness and juiciness

Rest of course is the seasoning and any other ingredient you like.

Sounds interesting?

NOW FOR THE INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO MAKE APPLE MANGO RAITA

  • Apples
  • Mango puree (and mango chunks too if preferred)
  • Pomegranate arils
  • Walnuts, for texture and nutrition
  • Yogurt (freshly made; not sour)
  • Optional sweetener (honey, sugar, jaggery, etc.)
  • Roasted jeera or cumin powder
  • Pink salt/black salt (kala namak) or regular salt (just a pinch)

That is it!

Of course, these ingredients are not written in cement so you can use any other fruit you like or have or any other flavoring/seasoning you like.

But do not miss the mango puree (fresh or even canned). That adds that lovely color, tropical flavor and custard like feel to the whole raita experience!

Just add mango puree to the fresh yogurt, stir in the chopped apple, pomegranate, chopped walnuts, roasted jeera powder, pinch of salt and that is it!

Chill for an hour at the least and enjoy with any meal or as a snack or dessert.

Enjoy and Happy Eating!

  • Why, some added dates or even raisins sound amazing too!
  • During off season, you can use canned mango or even frozen mango puree.
  • Adjust the amount of seasonings to your liking.
  • Make sure yogurt is fresh and not sour.
  • For more sweetness you can add honey if you like or even date syrup; jaggery powder would change the color of the raita.
  • Enjoy!
